A chiropractor's role in sports injuries

Here is a quick overview of what chiropractic rehab might look like for treating sports injuries. This information may prove to be helpful to individuals suffering from a sports injury relating to the neck, back, shoulders, or head.

Chiropractic rehab

Depending on the patient's sports injury, the chiropractor may rely on different manipulation techniques to start the treatment process. Manual pulses can be used to treat an injured joint. These pulses will vary from light to harsh, depending on the location of the injury, the level of pain, and the patient's ability to function. Most commonly, spinal manipulation is used because it uses a light to moderate amount of pressure.

Multiple visits to the chiropractor may be necessary to improve the injury. Over the course of these appointments, spinal tools and stretches will also be used to help the affected joint heal.

In some severe cases of sports injuries, a chiropractor may utilize other forms of manipulation. For example, ice, heat, and even electric stimulation are used in chiropractic rehab to encourage healing. Typically, the chiropractor will start with light to moderate manipulation techniques and gradually introduce ice, heat, or electric approaches if necessary.

What to expect

During chiropractic rehab for sports injuries, patients should expect to undergo manipulations at least once a week, if not two to three times a week, depending on the severity of the injury. It is important to understand that immediate relief is not likely. Some results may be instantly noticeable, but it will take a significant amount of time to completely restore function and eliminate pain.

Healing times are different for each person and their injury. For mild to moderate sports injuries, healing times may take anywhere from four to eight weeks. For moderate to severe injuries, it can take up to four to six months to fully heal. Other treatments may also be required for complete healing.
